CHAPTER: 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Developed and developing countries are facing
serious environmental problems. The problems might be alike due to their global
warming, depletion of the ozone layer and others. Global warming is a part of
cyclic climate change and not manmade process. Global warming has appeared to be of
different aspects to different people in different times. Once the global
warming was indeed good news for the people of Northern areas. It was not until
1960s when scientists started to realize the long term hazards of global
warming in terms of threat to the world supply of food and the increased level
of oceans. The list of complains was enhanced by a number of categories added
lately like the degradation of ecosystems and the threats to human life.
Besides climate analysts, the debate
on the possible consequences gained popularity in not only economists, but also
among the security experts. Until then it was impossible to put forth something
concrete while keeping in mind the complexities associated with the global
warming. There were issues regarding the differences of one region from others and
the different impacts of humans on different parts of the world.
However, the dawn of 21st century evolved the fact that the
climate changes would be harmful for the globe especially for certain regions.
Some of those damages were even appearing in different parts of the world as an
alarm to wake up before it is too late. It was perceived by a majority that the
balance of nature will make any catastrophic situation. In case
industrialization led men to some consequence, then it will be surely in mankind’s
advantage. In short it was assumed then in case the damage will occur due to
climate change it will affect their remote descendants and to a minor level in
several centuries to come. It was not until late 1950s when scientists started
to realize that the quantity of carbon dioxide (CO2) is increasing in the
atmosphere suggesting that the global temperature will increase by few degrees
in 21st century.
The effect of climate change on human beings’ health was in
focus in 1990s.The issue was not only attracted the experts but also made the
general public worried. This work was, like many other ongoing researches was
supervised by not only government but also international organization like
World Health Organization (WHO) and International Panel on Climate Change
(IPCC).The UN Framework Convention on climate change published a shocking
report in 1994 that global warming is in progress and 90% of ozone layer is
destroyed. It can be explained by the
example that insect vectors of tropical diseases such as malaria and fever that
has already inflicted half a billion people would expand its range. It was
revealed that the impacts of global warming will be felt in developing nations
where the habitants of developed world were worried about the transport of diseases
to temperate zone. Many environmental related NGOs began public movement
for reducing carbon dioxide emission.
Global
Warming has led to the rise of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere, rise in the
temperature of sea surface, rise in frequency of hurricanes and extent of sea
ice.
Graph 1 shows the level of Carbon
Dioxide in atmosphere in past 1200 Years. The increase in the level of Carbon
Dioxide in atmosphere determines the Global Temperature.

Evidence
against global warming-
According to Andrew Marshall, a
global research astrophysicist, Pluto has been also experiencing Global
Warming; earth is not only the planet to be experiencing the Global Warming. In
May, 2006, space.com reported that a massive hurricane occurred in Jupiter
caused by climate change, which is expected to rise the planet temperature by
10 degrees. In addition, National Geography news reported that climate change
is a natural phenomenon as opposed to being man made. The report of NASA
mentions that Mars ice caps are melting due to rise in Carbon Dioxide just like
the earth. In 2004, the associated press and London telegraph reported that
satellites which measure the temperature of sun light has recorded an increase
in the sun’s temperature. The sun is warming up that is leading to Global
Warming in the past 100 years. The increased radiation from the sun results in
climatic change.
