Title - “Study on the Development
of a New Intumescent Paint System for Middle East Market”
Table of Contents
Introduction
Research Background
PROMAT
MIDDLE EAST is a subsidiary of Promat International, part of the Etex Group of
Companies, a global organisation with over 13,500 employees and a presence in
42 countries. Promat is a Market leader in passive fire protection and high
temperature insulation. The fire protection division offers an extensive range
of boards, penetration seals, glazing and spray products designed to provide
systems which meet the most stringent requirement of today’s projects.
Operating from a global perspective as a consultant, manufacturer and
supplier of fire protection and high temperature insulation
materials, Promat provides a comprehensive service for those involved
in the procurement, specification, construction and maintenance of a wide range
of applications.
Introduction about the Subject:-
Spray
film WB2 was first developed and tested in 2002 for 60 minute fire protection.
Further development of Spray film led to the development, testing and launch of
Spray film WB3 in 2003 for up to 90 minutes fire protection. In 2007, Spray
film WB3 was further tested to BS 476: Part 21 for 120 minutes fire protection.
Spray
film WB3 had been tested under the UL scheme but the loadings were uneconomical
compared to the competition. The scope of the UL testing has now been expanded
to cover 180 minutes (with limited sizes up to 240 minutes) but these remain
un-economical. The Middle East market has huge potential for both non-reactive
(sprays) and reactive (intumescent) structural steel protection. Whilst there
has been slow down in certain markets (mainly Dubai) there are a number of developing and emerging
markets (Qatar, KSA and Oman) where both
use of steel frame construction and the use of intumescent-based structural
steel protection offers significant business/growth opportunities.
Promat
Middle East requires a product to meet both the commercial and technical requirements
to compete with the PPG Coatings, Audax GmbH, Jotun Paints (Europe) Limited and
Nullifire Limited systems.
Aims and Objectives
Key
strategic objectives are to:
Regain
lost market share
Grow
market share
Have
competitive offer in targeted markets
Phase
1) – Regain Market Share in 120 min BS and 180 min UL Market
Short
term this can only be achieved with a Solvent based product . From a market
perspective solvent based paints have taken market share from water based
paints at all periods of PFP. Water
based products maintain market share in some countries such as Oman, Kuwait,
Saudi for example however, these markets are predominantly applying single
thickness and not using the A/V principal and not always the higher period of
fire resistance.
At
this moment in time PROMAT have only
witnessed a limited number of projects where the client / specifier has
insisted on water based products v solvent, but typically, due to commercial
pressures, these design requirements are conceded by the client /specifier due
to commercial reasons.
